The charitable STOP Diabetes Foundation’s concentrated efforts to erase the label of Peel being the Diabetes capital of Canada by the year 2020, kicked into high gear on Sunday June 21 with two-part information packed day at the Mississauga Convention Centre.

Over 500 people attended the free annual public awareness event, which ran in the morning from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM, with the educational segments widely broadcast to a much larger audience through both traditional and social media platforms. Certified diabetes specialists, doctors, pharmacists and dieticians, all of whom volunteer for STOP Diabetes Foundation, educated attendees about the importance of lifestyle, diet and fitness as a means to prevent the growing epidemic of diabetes. Attendees were also treated to a healthy lunch along with door prizes.

The STOP Diabetes public awareness messages were amplified by the presence of a soulful voice, with Bollywood singer Harshdeep Kaur making an appearance at the afternoon media event from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM. She spoke about the prevalence of the epidemic of diabetes especially amongst the South Asian community and emphasized the need for urgent and serious action to halt the growing health concerns of obesity and diabetes among South Asian youth. She even sportingly partook in a challenge presented to her by the organization’s founder Dr. Harpreet Bajaj by giving up one unhealthy food (Indian sweets for one month).

New initiatives to fight the epidemic of diabetes in the Peel region were announced by the organization’s founder, Dr. Harpreet Singh Bajaj. These initiatives include a social media directive focused on South Asian youth; a high-risk awareness initiative aimed at adults with stationary jobs involving low physical activity; restaurant and Gurudwara initiatives to provide healthy mealtime and snack options; a myth busters initiative focused on diet and fitness myths and a women’s preventive health initiative linking to issues such as infertility and pregnancy complications.

Later in the evening, Harshdeep Kaur enthralled guests with her melodic and mesmerizing voice, performing at an intimate medical and legal professionals’ fundraiser for the charitable organization.
