Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement on the occasion of Mother’s Day:

“Today we celebrate all mothers across Canada and around the world for their dedication, unconditional love and support for their families.

“Mothers are the keystone of our families. They provide guidance, advice and kindness to their children and partners, many while managing careers, taking care of elderly family members and contributing to their community.

“Our Government recognizes the importance of supporting mothers and their families. That is why we are taking action to support families through tax measures and benefits such as the Family Tax Cut, the Universal Child Care Benefit, the Child Care Expense Deduction, the Family Caregiver Tax Credit, and the Employment Insurance Compassionate Care Benefit. These measures are benefiting Canadian families and allowing them to spend more quality time together while keeping more money in their pockets.

“Internationally, our Government continues to take a leadership role in promoting and improving maternal, newborn and child health, in order to ensure it remains a global development priority.

“On this special day, Laureen and I would like to honour all mothers and grandmothers for their commitment to their families and for their constant love and devotion.”
