“The Urban Alliance on Race Relations (UARR) welcomes Mayor Tory’s announcement for a permanent cancellation of carding. Numerous community organizations and activists, including the UARR, have maintained this position over many years. Together we have organized many community discussions and made deputations to the Toronto Police Services Board against carding, its disproportionate effect on people of colour in our city, and the toxic impact it has had on young African Canadian and brown men in particular.

We commend and congratulate the efforts made by advocacy groups on this issue and look forward to the implementation of Mayor Tory’s announcement as formal policy.

The elimination of carding would be an important step towards building healthier relationships between our police officers and residents throughout Toronto, especially in those communities which are particularly subject to police presence.”

Nigel Barriffe

President, Urban Alliance on Race Relations.
