Stephanie Kusie, Shadow Minister for Democratic Institutions, issued a statement ahead of Minister Gould’s appearance on the Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs:

“Justin Trudeau is failing to be transparent with Canadians on his creation of a new government-appointed office to oversee the Leaders’ debate ahead of the federal election. By unilaterally imposing new rules around televised leaders debates, Justin Trudeau is once again attempting to rig the 2019 election in his favour.

“Today, Conservatives are questioning Minister Gould on the Debates Commission to demand transparency and accountability on behalf of Canadians. By imposing elections regulations without debate in the House of Commons, Justin Trudeau’s actions are an affront to democracy. The Trudeau government still have not revealed a detailed mandate or timeline to establish their creation of a new government-appointed office.

“Canada’s Conservatives firmly opposed the creation of this commission when it was brought before the Procedure and House Affairs committee. Elections must be decided by Canadians in a transparent electoral system that is fair for all parties. This is not what is happening under the Trudeau Liberals.

“Canada’s electoral system is integral to our democracy and Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives will continue to fight Justin Trudeau’s desperate attempts to rig the next election to the Liberals’ advantage.”
