Sunday, June 21st marks an important date in the fight against diabetes in the Peel region as The Stop Diabetes Foundation Inc. hosts an informative public event to generate awareness about diabetes particularly amongst the South Asian community.

STOP DIABETES 2015 - English with Bus

Peel Region holds the unfortunate distinction of being the diabetes capital of Canada. The STOP Diabetes foundation’s mission termed VISION 2020 aims to take away this #1 tag by the year 2020. The foundation aims to accomplish this through communication of simplified information to the public – emphasizing lifestyle, diet and fitness as the most powerful tools in this fight against diabetes.

In an endeavour to facilitate the accomplishment of this mission, the STOP Diabetes foundation will host a two-part day at Mississauga Convention Center on Sunday, June 21. The first part of day will be an annual awareness event open to the public from 9am to 4pm. Certified diabetes specialists, doctors, pharmacists and dieticians will provide education on diet and health. A free healthy lunch along with door prizes will be included as a part of this information filled afternoon.

The foundation has arranged for a free bus service from two locations in Malton and Brampton. A gathering of over 500 people is expected to attend this informative afternoon with the educational segments set to be widely broadcast to a much larger audience through both traditional and social media platforms.

The afternoon session will be concluded by a media reception to be held from 3pm to 4pm, where several key new initiatives to fight the epidemic of diabetes in the Peel region will be announced by the organization’s founder, Dr. Harpreet Singh Bajaj. These initiatives will include a social media directive focused on South Asian youth; high-risk awareness initiative aimed at adults with stationary jobs with low physical activity; restaurant and Gurudwara initiatives to provide healthy mealtime and snack options; a myth busters initiative focused on diet and fitness myths and a women’s preventive health initiative linking to issues such as infertility. Renowned Bollywood singer, Harshdeep Kaur of ‘Heer’ fame is especially being flown in from Mumbai to add gravitas to the proceedings with her soulful voice. She is scheduled to perform at a medical professionals fundraiser for the organization later in the evening.

STOP Diabetes foundation looks forward to the support of local community as well as media in this benevolent cause to succeed in its fight against these important health concerns.
