Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement to mark the Lunar New Year:

“Laureen and I extend our best wishes to all those celebrating the Lunar New Year in Canada, in Asia and around the world.

“Lunar New Year celebrations are filled with wonderful traditions that date back thousands of years, from honouring ancestors to holding colourful parades and enjoying traditional feasts.

“As families and friends gather for these joyful celebrations, it is important to reflect on the year that has just passed and to look forward to the new one with optimism. Our Government will work to help ensure that the coming year is one of prosperity and peace for all Canadians.

“This celebration is also a fitting time for Canadians to reflect on the tremendous contributions that members of the Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and other Asian communities continue to make to our country.

“On behalf of my entire family, I hope that the Lunar New Year brings you much health, prosperity and happiness.”
