Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement announcing the appointment of the Honourable Leo Housakos as the new Speaker of the Senate of Canada:

“I am pleased to announce today that Senator Leo Housakos has accepted to become the next Speaker of the Senate of Canada.

“I would like to note that Senator Housakos’ appointment is also jointly recommended by both leaders in the Upper Chamber, the Honourable Claude Carignan and the Honourable James Cowan.

“Senator Housakos has represented Quebecers and all Canadians in the Upper Chamber with dignity and dedication for over six years.

“The experience he has gained as a member of several standing committees and as Speaker pro tempore of the Senate will serve him well as he takes on this important role.

“I am confident that Senator Housakos will be an excellent Speaker of the Senate and that he will carry on the fine work of former Speaker Pierre Claude Nolin, whose recent passing we continue to mourn.”
