NDP Leader Tom Mulcair made the following statement in remembrance of the September 11th terrorist attacks:

“It is with deep sadness that New Democrats commemorate the 14th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the United States that shocked the world on September 11, 2001.

On that day, first responders in New York City, Pennsylvania and around the Pentagon rushed to assist survivors and keep as many people as possible out of harm’s way. Their rapid intervention saved countless lives.

On this side of the border, many Canadians also responded with compassion and generosity. As more than 200 planes were diverted to Canada in the hours following the attacks, communities welcomed thousands of stranded passengers and flight crews into their homes. This gesture of solidarity is representative of Canadians’ charitable nature and it makes us all proud.

Today, our thoughts are with the families of the 26 Canadians who perished that day, and with the more than 3,000 innocent victims.”
