Debris from ‘Russian-made missile’ found

Following an international investigation, the Netherlands’ national prosecutor’s office said that the fragments were possibly from a BUK surface-to-air missile system.Investigators say the parts are “of particular interest” because they could “possibly provide more information about who was involved in the crash”.

However, proof of a “casual connection” between the debris and crash has not yet been proved. The discovery marks the first time that that possible evidence of a missle has been found.

The fragments are currently in the possession of the Dutch Safety Board, who are due to give their final report on the crash in October. A statement from prosecutors said: “The Joint Investigation Team (JIT) investigates several parts, possibly originating from a Buk surface-air-missile system. “The parts are of particular interest to the criminal investigation as they can possibly provide more information about who was involved in the crash of MH17.” Weapons and forensics experts will now be drafted in to establish the origins of the parts.
