Scarborough Liberals pledge to ensure greater retirement security for our seniors

At a recent campaign stop Justin Trudeau committed that a Liberal government will make sure Canadian seniors get the secure and dignified retirement they deserve.

“With household debt at a record level and an economy in recession, residents in Scarborough – and across the country – are worried about their retirement,” said the Liberal candidate for Scarborough-Agincourt, Arnold Chan. “Right now, on average, a retired person receives just $618 per month from the Canada Pension Plan – hardly enough to live on. Our seniors are struggling just to make ends meet. These are people who have worked hard their entire lives, and should be looking forward to retiring in dignity instead of worrying about how they will survive.

” Scarborough Liberal candidates point to the fact that only Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party have a plan to ensure that all Canadians get the dignified retirement they have earned. Part of a three-point plan to create jobs, grow the middle class, and help those working hard to join the middle class, a Liberal government will work with the provinces and territories to significantly reform our retirement security system by:

 Investing three times more payments to our lowest income seniors than any other party

 Restoring the eligibility age for Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement to 65

 Introducing a new Seniors Price Index – in recognition of the many seniors who live on fixed incomes – to make sure that Old Age Security and the Guaranteed Income Supplement keep up with the rising cost of living

 Not cutting pension income splitting for seniors

“Every day, I speak with people in Scarborough who tell me that they are struggling – that they are working longer and harder just to make ends meet, that they are having to choose between saving for their kids’ education or for their own retirement. That’s just not right,” said the Liberal candidate for Scarborough-Southwest, Bill Blair. “Only Liberals have a plan to ensure seniors are able to retire in security and dignity.”
