Russia has assured India that it stands with it in its quest for a seat on the expanded United Nations Security Council (UNSC), a move that could acquire some momentum as the General Assembly is set to enter its 70th session this month.
A day after it went along with the United States and China disagreeing with the proposal for text-based negotiations on reforms, Russian stand was conveyed by its Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov at a meeting with Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs Sujata Mehta.
Earlier this week, the UNSC agreed that negotiations on the basis of a text be taken forward to the 70th session for the UN General Assembly.
Three of the five permanent members of the Security Council have reservations on the issue even as India, Japan, Germany and Brazil hope to find a place on the expanded high-table. The United States and Russia have been supportive of India’s effort to be a member on the expanded UNSC.
