William Barr has come under intense pressure as he testified, with Senators accusing him of lying to protect President Donald Trump.

US Attorney-General William Barr has defended his handling of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia report amid new revelations that  Mueller expressed frustration to  Barr.

Mueller sent a stinging letter to the Attorney-General about how he was portraying the investigation’s findings. Barr’s first appearance on Capitol Hill since releasing a redacted version of the report, presented a dramatic showdown as Democrats confronted him with allegations that he spun the investigation’s findings in US President Donald Trump’s favour.

“I think this whole thing is sort of mind-bendingly bizarre,” Barr said of the letter controversy.  Democrats accused him of misleading politicians last month when he suggested he was unaware of concerns on the Mueller team about his actions. Hawaii Democratic Senator Mazie Hirono told Attorney General William Barr to his face that he should resign and accused the nation’s top law enforcement official of lying to Congress.

“Barr, now the American people know that you are no different from Rudy Giuliani or Kellyanne Conway or any of the other people who sacrificed their once decent reputation for the grifter and liar who sits in the Oval Office,” Senator Hirono said, referring to two of President Donald Trump’s top media surrogates. “You lied. And now we know,” Senator Hirono said. “But now we know more about your deep involvement and trying to cover up for Donald Trump. Being attorney general of the United States is a sacred trust. You have betrayed that trust. America deserves better. You should resign.” Barr’s appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee highlighted the partisan schism around Mueller’s report and the Justice Department’s handling of it.
