The Punjab assembly also unanimously passed a privilege motion on the last day of the session against the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandak Committee (SGPC) for condemning the Justice Ranjit Singh (retd) Commission report even before it was tabled in the House.

The motion was moved by parliamentary affairs minister Brahm Mohindra after Congress MLA Kuldeep Vaid raised the issue during a debate on the report.

Vaid said by condemning the report on sacrilege of Guru Granth Sahib, the SGPC has only acted like an organisation of the Badal family or of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD).

Vaid’s statement was supported by jails minister Sukhjinder Randhawa, who also said the SGPC was only an elected body of the Sikhs and not a religious organisation.

AAP legislator HS Phoolka and Lok Insaaf Party leader Balwinder Singh Bains also sought condemnation of the SGPC on the issue. The privilege motion was passed unanimously after local bodies minister Navjot Sidhu requested the chief minister to condemn the SGPC move.
