Introduction

 Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced the appointment of Lois Mitchell as the next Lieutenant Governor of Alberta.

Ms. Mitchell is an accomplished businesswoman, long-time volunteer and community leader in Alberta. With over 25 years of business expertise, Ms. Mitchell is currently a senior partner and founder of Rainmaker Global Business Development, a recognized international leader in consulting and marketing.

Ms. Mitchell shares her knowledge and expertise with numerous organizations whose interests range from culture, to business, to education, to sports. She sits on the board of directors for UBS Bank (Canada), Mitacs and Canada World Youth and is co-founder and Vice Chair of the Global Business Forum. She is also the Governor of the Canadian Women’s Hockey Association, the Co-Chair of the Gold Medal Plates Dinner in Calgary in support of current and aspiring Canadian Olympians, chairs the advisory board of the Latin American Research Centre at the University of Calgary, and was a board member of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

In 2012 she was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada and received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.

The appointment announced today is the culmination of a process undertaken by the Advisory Committee on Vice-Regal Appointments.

Lieutenant Governors are appointed by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. They serve terms of at least five years, during which they act as the province’s vice-regal representative.

Prime Minister Harper also took the opportunity to thank the Honourable Donald S. Ethell for his dedicated service as Lieutenant Governor of Alberta since May 11, 2010.
