Police to investigate emergency response in Good Samaritan’s death

Al-Hasnawi, 19, was shot Dec. 2 after coming to the aid of an older man being verbally accosted by two men on Main Street East in Hamilton’s lower city. It happened just outside the mosque where Al-Hasnawi had attended an evening prayers.

Niagara regional police have been asked to conduct a criminal investigation into the emergency medical care provided to a Brock student who was fatally shot after coming to the aid of an older man being accosted in Hamilton.Yosif Al-Hasnawi was shot Dec. 2 after trying to stop two men harassing an older man near a Hamilton mosque, where he had been taking part in a religious celebration. Al-Hasnawi was this week in his native Iraq.

The 19-year-old aspiring doctor has since been hailed as a good Samaritan and a hero by police and community members. Hamilton police issued a media release saying Niagara Regional Police will handle the case “to ensure a fair and impartial investigation is completed.”

Dale Burningsky King and James Matheson have been charged in connection with his murder. The investigation has been necessitated after witnesses to the incident accused paramedics of grabbing, shaking, laughing at and failing to quickly transport him to hospital. There are also questions about why Al-Hasnawi was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital instead of the closer Hamilton General Hospital.The matter is already under investigation by the Hamilton Paramedic Service and the Ontario
