Ontario sales tax on food less than $4

I have noticed that many South Asian eating places charge the Ontario sales tax for meals, snacks and food under $4. Upon checking I was told (and such information is also available online) that they shouldn’t be, and that any prepared meal from any retail outlet in Ontario should only charge 5% for meals under $4. Yet too many places charge the full HST of 13% in the Peel region.

I am writing this to you to make people aware and to galvanize the authorities to take remedial measures which I hope your publication will help do.
