Nepalese markets of Brahmdev and Mahendra Nagar, adjoining the Indian district of Champawat, wore a deserted look for the fourth day as the administration did not allow vehicles taking Indian citizens and goods to cross over.
The step has come following a threat by a Maoist student leader of setting Indian vehicles on fire, blaming India of interfering in the matters of Nepal.
“Despite peace in the towns of Mahendra Nagar and Brahmdev, the Nepalese police and administration did not allow Indian vehicles to enter the country as the threat of setting these ablaze has not been withdrawn,” said Champawat Superintendent of Police DS Kunwar.
He said a meeting of Indian and Nepalese businessmen, along with officers of Nepal and India as well as the leaders of the students wing concerned, had been called by Nepalese officers on October 1 where it would be decided whether the Indian vehicles should be allowed into Nepalese territory or not. “Indian and Nepalese citizens are facing difficulties. The Nepalese are not getting essential goods while Indian traders are not able to sell their goods to their Nepalese clients, on whom they depend fully for their business in this part of the Indo-Nepal border,” said the Champawat SP.
