Queen’s Park – Monique Taylor, the NDP’s critic for Children and Youth Services, today endorsed the call for action by the Provincial Advocate for Children and Youth on the recommendations made by the Coroner’s Inquest into the death of Jeffrey Baldwin.
“The tragic death of Jeffrey Baldwin should never have happened – but it was a wake-up call that resulted in 103 recommendations from the Coroner’s Inquest. Today, more than a year after those recommendations were made, only 20 % of those recommendations have been adopted,” Taylor said.
“I share the Advocate’s frustration at the lack of urgency in addressing these recommendations. The first recommendation from the Inquest was that the Child Protection Information Network (CPIN) be delivered within 24 months but we are told it will not be in place until 2019.”
“We owe it to Jeffrey Baldwin, and to all children in care, to put the tools in place that will keep them safe and it needs to be done now,” Taylor said. “2019 is three years later than the recommendation deadline and almost 20 years after Jeffrey’s death. Where is the urgency?”
