N.S. students will be able to choose preferred name and gender in school system

Students in Nova Scotia will soon be able to choose how they want to be identified in the provincial school system when it comes to their preferred name and gender.By the end of this month, all Nova Scotia students will be able to choose the name they would like to use at school — for everything from report cards, to attendance lists, to honor rolls.There are exceptions to this new policy: a student’s legal name has to appear on their graduation certificate and high school transcript, unless the student changes their information through vital statistics.

Councillor wants drive thru to be banned

Halifax Coun. Richard Zurawski recently asked city staff to study the idea of banning drive-thrus in the municipality. “The motion is to remove drive-thrus in the municipality, but that means that any drive-thrus that are currently in existence can stay, it just means that no new drive-thrus can be constructed & you couldn’t add on to any existing drive-thrus,” said Halifax Regional Municipality spokesman Nick Ritcey.

3,300 New Jobs Created Year-Over-Year in Saskatchewan

 Saskatchewan’s employment increased by 3,300 jobs from September 2017, largely driven by growth in the private sector. Saskatchewan had 575,300 people employed in September 2018, according to data released by Statistics Canada.   Seasonally adjusted employment was up by 1,800 from August 2018.  Full-time jobs increased by 1,000 from September 2017 and part-time jobs increased by 2,300.“For the second consecutive month, Saskatchewan has seen solid employment gains,” Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison said.  “Our government has been working hard to steadily increase jobs, to strengthen Saskatchewan’s labour force, and attract more skilled workers to our province.” Saskatchewan’s unemployment rate was 6.4 per cent (seasonally adjusted).
