MPP Jill Andrew joins Girl Guides of Canada for conversation on body image and self esteem

TORONTO — Jill Andrew, MPP for Toronto-St.Paul’s, will join the Girls Guides of Canada–Guides du Canada on Monday in Toronto for an important conversation on body image, self esteem, youth activism and the impact of eating disorders and body-shaming.

Andrew recently introduced Bill 61, which, if passed, would proclaim the first week of February Eating Disorders Awareness Week in Ontario.

An estimated 1,000 to 1,500 Canadians per year die as a result of eating disorders and approximately half a million of those living with eating disorders are in Ontario.

“Women and girls are often the target of eating disorders. However, eating disorders do not discriminate,” said Andrew. “People from all genders, races, abilities, sexual orientations, socio-economic backgrounds and ages can be impacted.

“Bill 61 is a vital step towards raising awareness and making things better for Ontarians living with eating problems and other body-image challenges.”

Girl Guides of Canada is a catalyst for and supporter of girls and young women from all walks of life, providing them with safe spaces to find their voice and have open conversations. From leadership and community service, to encouraging girls to learn about healthy relationships and inclusivity, Girls Guides of Canada has been at the forefront of girl empowerment for more than 100 years.

“I am excited to speak with these girls because they aren’t only our future leaders, they are our young leaders today,” said Andrew. “They have the power to amplify the body image conversation, and we, as adults, have a responsibility to listen.”

Andrew will also lead a Q&A and take part in Girl Guides activities, when she sits down with the girl members Monday evening.

Andrew is also the co-founder of Body Confidence Canada and a survivor of her own struggles with body image.

“We live in a highly image-saturated society,” said Andrew. “Community advocacy and education on how to love our bodies and support others along their journey is more crucial now than ever.”
