MP Costas Menegakis announces Government of Canada support for seniors in Richmond Hill

(Richmond Hill, Ontario) – Seniors in Richmond Hill will soon have new opportunities to become better connected with the online world; today announced Richmond Hill MP Costas Menegakis on behalf of the Honourable Alice Wong, Minister of State (Seniors).

The Russian Library and Community Information Centre is receiving $24,100 for their project titled, “Computer Classes for Seniors: Intergenerational Connection” from the New Horizons for Seniors Program.  The project will help seniors learn computer skills and better understand the internet from youth volunteers through weekly computer training classes. Seniors will be empowered through access to the online world through this intergenerational-relationship building activity.

“Our Government recognizes the valuable contribution seniors have made to our society and the economy,” said MP Menegakis. “By supporting New Horizons for Seniors Program projects, we are acting to ensure that seniors in Richmond Hill and all of Canada, maintain a good quality of life and continue to be active members of their communities.”

“We are happy that the project ‘Russian Canadian Social Seniors Club,’ the initiative of the Russian Library and Community Information Centre, was supported by the Government of Canada,” said Svetlana Roufanova, founder and program coordinator of the Russian Library and Community Information Centre. “The program will help integrate Russian-speaking seniors to Canadian life and at the same time, help them become better educated and responsible citizens who actively participate in our community.”

Under the New Horizons for Seniors Program, up to $25,000 in grant funding can be provided to eligible organizations for community-based projects that are led or inspired by seniors. Since 2006, the program has funded more than 13,000 projects in hundreds of communities across Canada.

Economic Action Plan 2014 increased funding for the New Horizons for Seniors Program by $5 million per year, for a total of $50 million provided to this program annually.
