A 22-year-old Gatineau woman has been charged with manslaughter, assault and assault causing bodily harm in the death of her six-month-old child in 2014, police said
Gatineau police and paramedics received a medical call about a baby found lifeless in her family home the morning of Nov. 16, 2014.The six-month-old girl was taken to hospital but despite resuscitative efforts, she was pronounced dead at hospital.
Police are not releasing the cause of death, but said in a news conference that suspicions were raised following the coroner’s initial findings.The case was then handed over to police for further investigation, said Gatineau police spokesman Sgt. Jean-Paul Lemay.After a five-month investigation and input from various forensics experts, the mother was arrested and charged. “The expertise showed that the baby suffered trauma in various episodes of her life,” Lemay told reporters.
