Why are you running to be a Member of Parliament?

My family and I immigrated to Canada shortly after completing my Masters of Education in the UK. As an advocate for protection of programs at my son’s local school, I learned the value of public service and was motivated to accept a job with the Ontario Government as an advisor for Community Services, Health and Long Term Care, and Citizenship and Immigration. I now look forward to serving as the Member of Parliament for Scarborough-Centre.

What do you see as the top issues for voters in Scarborough Centre?

Scarborough is one of the best communities in Canada, where so many choose to live and raise their families. We also face real challenges. People are concerned about having a roof over their heads and not having to choose between paying the rent and putting food on the table. They want to spend less time commuting to and from work so they can spend more time with their families. They need a helping hand.

Do you have a plan to help our young people break into the job market?

Our future economic and social prosperity relies on our youth, yet they’re suffering an unemployment rate well above the national average. We will invest $1.3 billion over three years to create 120,000 youth jobs through a renewed Youth Employment Strategy, including green jobs as guides and interpreters at the Rouge National Park. We’ll also help employers create new co-op placements for science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and business students, and restore the Youth Service  Program to help youth gain work and life experience participating in community building projects across Canada.

What can be done to help families struggling to make ends meet?

The Canadian middle class hasn’t had a decent pay raise in 30 years, and families have been falling further behind after a decade of a Harper Government blind to our struggle to make ends meet. The Liberal Party understands the challenges of middle class families, and we have a plan for real change that speaks directly to the challenges we face every day. Our tax cut for the middle class will save you as much as $670 per person, or up to $1350 for a couple, giving you a little help to make ends meet. And with our plan for fairness, families will receive a monthly Canada Child benefit worth up to $533 per child every month. Unlike the Conservative plan, ours will not be taxable and benefits won’t go to millionaires that don’t need the money – just to middle class families that need a little help. According to an independent analysis by the Library of Parliament, our plan will lift 315,000 children out of poverty.

What is your position on Bill C24 and the creation of different classes of Canadian citizenship?

The Liberal Party voted against Bill C24. As a government, we will immediately move to repeal this heinous and reprehensible legislation and ensure all Canadians enjoy the rights of citizenship that they deserve. Our leader Justin Trudeau visited Scarborough Centre the first week of this campaign, and he reaffirmed our belief that there is no such thing as two classes of Canadian citizens: “A Canadian is a Canadian is a Canadian.” Liberals believe that Canada is stronger not in spite of our diversity, but because of it.
