ICCC President meets Minister Bains – Pledges support to achieve rapid economic development

At a special meeting with Mr. Sanjay Makkar, President, Indo-Canada Chamber of Commerce (ICCC), the newly appointed federal minister for Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Hon. Mr. Navdeep Bains, said that the new Liberal government is deeply committed to creating a conducive atmosphere for economic development for all sections of the Canadian society.

In an exclusive interaction in Ottawa on Monday November 9, 2015, with the ICCC President, Minister Bains said that for the new government, economic development and trade were a high priority, and these were among the many areas in which there was convergence with the ICCC.

“I look forward to cooperating with the ICCC on several matters, and especially on economic development,” Minister Bains noted.
Mr. Makkar congratulated Minister Bains on his appointment as a senior minister in the federal cabinet of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and being given charge of important portfolios of innovation, science and economic development.

He then assured the Minister of renewed support from the Chamber to the federal government’s endeavours to engage the Indo-Canadian business and professional community in rapid implementation of its economic and social agenda. The ICCC President invited Minister Bains to the new ICCC headquarters in Toronto and meet with ICCC’s board and members.

Minister Bains recalled his past association with the Chamber and congratulated Mr. Makkar for steering the Chamber back to its stated objective of trade promotion and creating opportunities for Indo-Canadians. The Minister said that the new government was focused on inclusive growth and wanted to ensure that no Canadian was left behind in economic development.

Minister Bains represents the riding of Mississauga—Malton in the House of Commons after his election in 2015. He previously represented the riding of Mississauga—Brampton South from 2004 to 2011. On November 4, 2015, he was appointed the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Economic Development in the present Cabinet, headed by Justin Trudeau.

He is a distinguished visiting professor at Ryerson University – Ted Rogers School of Management and holds an MBA with a specialization in Finance. As a Certified Management Accountant, he has worked several years in accounting and financial analysis for the Ford Motor Company of Canada.
A longtime resident of both Mississauga and Brampton and has strong ties to the social and cultural associations of Mississauga—Malton, Minister Bains has been active in a variety of community organizations, as a board member for the Mississauga Food Bank, having worked with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Guru Gobind Singh Children’s Foundation, as well as having served as an Ontario board member with the Heart and Stroke Foundation. He is the recipient of a number of awards recognizing his work in promoting diversity within his community.

Having served as the Member of Parliament for Mississauga—Brampton South from 2004 to 2011, Minister Bains gained extensive experience as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister and as the Liberal Critic for Public Works and Government Services, the Treasury Board, International Trade, Natural Resources, and Small Business and Tourism.

Minister Bains has extensive experience Mr. Makkar assured the Minister that the Chamber would work closely with his ministry to create mutually beneficial opportunities.
