OTTAWA – The Hon. Tony Clement, Foreign Affairs Critic for the Official Opposition today encouraged the Liberal government to continue the previous Conservative government’s strong and principled stand on human rights as Prime Minister Trudeau attends the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Malta.

“Our Conservative government under Stephen Harper was a prevailing force against appalling human rights abuses in Commonwealth nations such as Uganda and Sri Lanka. The Conservative Party hopes this will continue, and that the Prime Minister will keep pushing for an end to the intimidation and incarceration of political leaders and journalists, harassment of minorities, reported disappearances, and allegations of extra-judicial killings in some member states, “ said MP Clement. “Will the Liberals continue to support the strong stand taken by Canada on the decriminalization of homosexuality?  Will they fight for an end to early and forced child marriages, both scourges that remain in some Commonwealth nations? We also ask if the Liberals will stand up against the wrongful imprisonment of the Maldives’ ex-president Mohamed Nasheed.”

Clement added that it is the Conservative Party’s sincere hope that Canada will continue to push the Commonwealth and its Secretary-General, Kamalesh Sharma, to stand up for the values of freedom, democracy, human rights and the rule of law that it traditionally had in the past.
