Mayor John Tory and City staff hosted the fifth annual Mayor’s School Cricket Tournament finals at Sunnybrook Park on Saturday.

“The Mayor’s School Cricket Tournament brings out the top young players in Toronto for a fun-filled day of competitive matches,” said Mayor Tory. “Cricket is becoming one of the fastest growing sports in our city and its popularity transcends culture and community. I’d like to acknowledge CIMA and CIBC for their efforts in growing the sport in Toronto and investing in the well-being of our youth.”

Among the many other enthusiastic spectators were Martin Saxton, Chair of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) in Canada, Keith Adamson General Manager CIBC and Tony Velaidum Vice President Operational Finance, Canadian Tire Corporaton.

The CIBC Trophy/Mayor’s School Cricket tournament, presented by CIMA Canada, is a way for CIBC and the CIMA to provide support and engage youth, and to contribute to the community and the sport of cricket. Numerous other sponsors and community partners also help to support the tournament.

Cricket rivals basketball’s popularity in some schools. It is played in more than 100 countries around the world. About 50 school teams take part in Toronto tournaments each year.
