Announcing support to AAP, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat said: “We want to defeat the BJP,” and added that his party would work for broader Left unity to build a potent spectrum against the BJP.

The combined Left, consisting of six parties, has put up candidates at 15 of the 70 constituencies in Delhi.

The CPM, which along with the CPI is considered to be the major in the Left rainbow, however, expressed no love lost for the Congress as far as the Delhi elections are concerned. But its priority is to defeat the BJP, which is facing a fierce challenge from AAP, as indicated by poll surveys.

The CPI followed the CPM in pledging support to AAP.“The decision in this regard is being taken after seeing the all-out offensive by communal forces led by the BJP and spearheaded by the divisive anti-national RSS to capture power,” a CPI statement said
