A Nova Scotia woman who has alleged that she was gang raped by British sailors is suing the U.K. government. She has argued that it should pay damages for harm she suffered in the incident.

Four men were originally charged with sexual assault causing bodily harm and participating in a group sexual assault in barracks on April 10, 2015. The sailors were visiting Halifax for a hockey tournament at the time of the alleged assault.

The woman’s lawyer, Michael Dull, shared with media that part of the motivation for the lawsuit is that the woman is upset the British government has fully funded the defence of its four employees. Charges against two of the sailors have been dropped, with Darren Smalley and Simon Radford still set to go on trial in Nova Scotia Supreme Court in Halifax.

The woman, whose name is banned from publication, has said that the Royal Navy bears responsibility for bringing the sailors to Canada and that she trusted the men and accompanied them to a party at the barracks because of their positions.

Those with chronic hepatitis C now have medical coverage in B.C.

Anyone who has chronic hepatitis C in British Columbia will be able to get treatment covered by British Columbia’s PharmaCare program under changes announced by the provincial government. Health Minister Adrian Dix has said that a new drug for the treatment of the disease has also been added to the PharmaCare formulary. Now  people will be able to get treatment, regardless of the severity of their disease, under the expansion of treatment options covered by PharmaCare, shared the minister with media. The government has said that the new drug, commonly known as Vosevi, was developed for adult patients whose disease has been difficult to treat and was not successfully treated with other medications.

The government estimates that 73,000 people in the province live with the virus, with the cost of treatment ranging from $45,000 to more than $100,000 per patient.
