Alberta Health Services (AHS) has issued a warning to Alberta women as a number of reported phone calls where the unknown caller urges the person to conduct a breast self-exam, while on the phone.
AHS said officials had received reports that eight women in the Edmonton, Barrhead and Athabasca areas had received a phone call from a man, who identified himself as working for a medical imaging facility. The caller relays follow-up information on a breast screening exam, and advises the woman on the phone to do a self-exam immediately, while on the phone.AHS said representatives may call to discuss a mammography appointment, they won’t ever ask a patient to conduct a self-exam over the phone.
Anyone who receives a phone call from a person asking you to do a breast self-exam while on the phone is asked to hang up, note the time and other details related to the call, and to contact local police via their non-emergency line (for EPS the number is 780-423-4567 or #377 on a mobile phone).
AHS said anyone uncomfortable contacting police, or uncertain if the call is legitimate is asked to call the AHS Screening Program Client Support Line at 1-866-727-3926. Officials from AHS have contacted police over the issue, and encourage anyone who encounters such a call to work with their local police.
