Statement from Suze Morrison, housing critic, on the erosion of rent control in Ontario

TORONTO CENTRE — Suze Morrison, Ontario NDP critic for housing, released the following statement on Doug Ford’s move to scrap rent control for all new rental units in the Fall Economic Statement:

“By cancelling rent control for an untold number of rental homes in the middle of a housing crisis, Doug Ford is intentionally driving up the cost of living for people. In rental homes without rent control, any month could be the month that a family gets a rent hike notice that makes their home no longer affordable to them.

Everyone deserves to be able to find a decent, reasonably-priced place to live. Already, too many throughout the province know the frustration of searching for a home they can afford, and too many feel the squeeze from paying high rent prices. Things are already getting tougher — and Doug Ford is hitting the gas on rent price hikes with this change.

Ford is also cancelling the Development Charges Rebate Program — a $100 million cut to affordable housing. That means the Ford Conservatives are not only failing to build affordable housing; but actively intentionally taking the affordable housing shortage from bad to worse. No one voted for that.”
