The City of Brampton is proud to recognize April as Sikh Heritage Month. April is an important month for Sikhs around the world; it marks Vaisakhi, the Sikh New Year and the formal creation of the Khalsa and the sacred articles of faith.
“Diversity is one of Brampton’s many strengths and we are proud to recognize our Sikh community by proclaiming April as Sikh Heritage Month. Sikh Canadians continue to enrich our country in numerous ways – socio-economic, political and cultural. The Brampton Sikh community is an example of leadership and involvement in our community, providing a source of inspiration for all,” said Mayor Linda Jeffrey
To honour outstanding members of Brampton’s Sikh community, the City is hosting an evening of speakers, award honourees and a tasting of traditional food on Tuesday, April 26 from 5 to 8 pm in the City Hall Atrium and West Tower Conservatory.
Honourees to be recognized at this year’s event are: Amrik Singh Ahluwalia, Chair, Peel Police Services Board; Raj Ghuman, local artist, songwriter and performer, media star and promoter of arts and culture; Iqbal Mahal, an original independent GTA Punjabi-language media pioneer, celebrated author, media personality and successful promoter of arts and culture programs; Jasmeet Singh (Jus Reign), social media celebrity with nearly 800,000 YouTube followers who is dedicated to tackling important issues facing youth, such as bullying, tolerance and diversity.
“I’m proud the City of Brampton is recognizing Sikh Heritage Month again and that this this year, we are honouring four special individuals who have made great contributions to the city and our community,” said City Councillor Gurpreet Dhillon, Wards 9 and 10.
