Canada’s premiers are going all out with offers to accept Syrian refugees by thousand. The process was set rolling with an election promise by Liberal leader Justin Trudeau to resettle 25,000 refugees by the end of the year. Last week a strong sense of disagreement to the settlement process had come from across the border, with more than half of governors of United States opposing the move to let Syrian refugees into their states. States protesting the admission of refugees range from Alabama and Georgia, to Texas and Arizona, to Michigan and Illinois, to Maine and New Hampshire. Among these 31 states, all but one have Republican governors, even though the final say rests with the federal government there. The governors were soon to react after authorities revealed that at least one of the suspects believed to be involved in the Paris terrorist attacks entered Europe among the current wave of Syrian refugees. He had deceived the authorities by falsely identifying himself as a Syrian named Ahmad al Muhammad and was allowed to enter Greece in early October.
The difference of opinion between the Premiers of Canadian provinces on one side and Governors of states in US shows lack of clarity and priority. While US is getting cautious on the issue, leaders are Canada are getting more than generous. While stating, “It’s our responsibility to be open to the world,” Premier Kathleen Wynne has restated her promise –resettlement of 2,500 refugees by the end of this year and 10,000 by the end of 2016. Quebec’s has announced their “target”. Alberta has expressed that the province can take 2,000 to 3,000. British Columbia can take 2,500; followed by New Brunswick with 1500, Prince Edward Island too has expressed favourable opinion for accepting about 100 families.
While the leaders in Canada are going all out to make a pitch for refugees, majority of Canadians in a poll conducted by Ipsos have expressed their disagreement with the plan of the Liberal government to resettle 25,00 refugees by the end of the year. The poll conducted by Ipsos exclusively for Global News, found that 60 per cent of Canadians disagree with Justin Trudeau’s election promise of relocating 25,000 Syrians displaced due to the conflict in Syria. 70 percent of the respondents in Alberta have expressed their disagreement. The lowest 56 percent of the respondents from Ontario too have expressed their displeasure with the plan. The numbers are high, and indicate that while Canadians share their views with the Americans, the leaders in Canada have different plans. And Canadians are not alone in expressing their fears. Another Ipsos poll conducted United States and the United Kingdom found this number jumps to 81 per cent, fuelling debate halt refugee resettlement programs.
Gauging the response from the Canadians, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had to forgo that promptness being shown earlier. Prime Minister Trudeau acknowledged his government won’t meet its deadline of resettling 25,000 Syrian refugees in Canada before the end of the year, and sounded a note of caution. “This is about welcoming people who are fleeing terrorism, not bringing terrorism with them,” Trudeau said. With Trudeau now willing to buy time on the resettlement, Liberal government will have to ensure that the probability of applying appropriate security checks in its right earnest doesn’t remain low. Canadians as respondents to the pools have expressed that the possibility of that terrorists pretending to be refugees entering our borders can’t be ruled out. We do need to be compassionate and rationale in our approach as Canada always has been. Displaced Syrians are not the perpetrators of murder, they are the victims of it. They are not the oppressors but the grieved party; and they deserve safety just as much as Canadians do. Our leaders in their attempt to fulfil humanitarian obligation for Syrian in their time of crisis will also have to take into the consideration the opinion of the Canadians too. Their assertion of being alert and thorough in arranging resettlement of refuges from Syria has to be taken as a sense of caution, to be implemented in to get it right.
