The alleged confession of one of the accused has apparently further embroiled Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia in the synthetic drugs scam case. Key accused Jagjit Singh Chahal has claimed to have given Rs. 35 lakh as election funds to Mr Majithia between 2007 and 2012.Arrested by the Punjab police in the drugs case in 2013, Chahal, who owns a pharma company, is currently out on bail. His statement is part of the charge-sheet filed in a Patiala court on March 3 by the Enforcement Directorate.
Punjab Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa on demanded a high level probe either by the enforcement directorate (ED) or the CBI into the properties of families of chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia.
He claimed that it was necessary in the context of unknown properties owned by Majithia that have surfaced during investigation in the drug racket case by the ED. He said the properties of the two families should be jointly probed as they were closely related and their joint dealings could not be ruled out.
He alleged that the disproportionate assets case against the Badals had fallen in the court mainly because of the fact that the witnesses, including the investigating officer, had backtracked after Badal became the chief minister. He said had the probe been handed over to the CBI at that time, the situation could have been different.
