2,400 Indians in US prisons for illegal entry

Nearly 2,400 Indians are languishing in various American jails for illegally crossing the US border to seek asylum in the country, according to the latest figures. These detainees are seeking asylum, claiming that they “experienced violence or persecution” in India. As many as 2,382 Indians are lodged in 86 jails in the US, according to the information obtained by North American Punjabi Association (Napa) through Freedom of Information Act. “This is a matter of concern that thousands of Indians, with an overwhelming majority of them being from Punjab, are languishing in jails in the US,” Napa president Satnam S Chahal has said. Chahal said there is a nexus of human traffickers and officials in Punjab, who encourage a young Punjabis to leave their homes to illegally enter the US and charge Rs 35-50 lakhs from each individual.

Fiancée of Lion Air crash victim takes wedding picture alon

An Indonesian woman whose fiancé died on a Lion Air flight that crashed was photographed in her wedding dress and professed her love for him on the day they were to have been married. Intan Syari’s fiance, Dr Rio Nanda Pratama, was among 189 people who were killed when the Boeing 737 crashed on October 29. Syari and Pratama, both 26, had planned to get married.Pratama was on his way home to Pangkal Pinang from Jakarta for the wedding. Syari said Pratama had joked before leaving that if he was late in returning, Syari should take photos in her wedding gown and send them to him. “He asked me to put on makeup and hold a white rose bouquet, take photos,” Syari said. She said Pratama was her “first love” and they started dating 13 years ago.

Man detained over bid to self-immolate with wine

A man who doused himself with wine and tried to self immolate on a train and waved a phone showing images of armed combatants is being held by French police on a potential terrorism charge. The man was tackled by a soldier and a police officer, both off duty. The train was travelling from Lille to Montpellier. The official said the man, who identified himself as Syrian, grew angry when a conductor asked him for a ticket, which he didn’t have. The newspaper Le Progres, which first reported the arrest, said the wine was a rose. The official didn’t know the vintage.

Santa begins answering Xmas wish mail in Germany

Santa Claus and his helpers have begun answering Christmas letters from children around the world sent to a special post office in the German town of Himmelpfort. It’s already received nearly 12,000 letters to the office that opens annually. The longest journey made by a letter so far is from South Africa.
