Russian tennis star Mikhail Youzhny has announced plans to wrap up his sports career in September after a tournament in Russia’s second largest city of St. Petersburg. The announcement of the 36-year-old player came after his confident 6-2, 6-0 straight sets win over US wildcard Emil Reinberg in the first round in Atlanta. The Russian is now facing Germany’s Mikhail Zverev in the second round in Atlanta.

Mitchell Johnson quits ‘lengthy’ BBL      

The high intensity and length of the Big Bash League (BBL) has forced Australia fast bowler Mitchell Johnson to distance himself from its further seasons, also raising questions about his further involvement with the Indian Premier League. Cricket Australia had recently announced a revamp of BBL, switching it to a full home-and-away season with 14 games, plus the finals.  “The intensity and length of BBL is just too much for someone who will be 37 at the start of the summer,” said Johnson’s manager Sam Halvorsen.

UAE, Palestine added to Asian Games football

The United Arab Emirates and Palestine have been officially added to the football event at the Asian Games after they were accidentally omitted from the original draw. The Asian Football Confederation conducted a limited re-draw at their headquarters in Kuala Lumpur to include the two sides alongside 24 others taking part in football at the Games.

Sri Lanka cricketer quizzed in rape case         

 Sri Lankan cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka was quizzed by the police over the alleged rape of a Norwegian woman in a hotel room where he was present. The police, however, said the evidence do not point to the opening batsman’s personal involvement in the case, in which one of his friends has been arrested. Gunathilaka, 27, was not aware of what took place between the Norwegian woman and his friend, who was accused of rape and arrested later.

BCCI to deposit ₹9.72 crore ED penalty

The BCCI has decided to pay a penalty of Rs 9.72 crore imposed on its former treasurer MP Pandove by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for alleged violation of Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) during 2009 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) in South Africa. It is learnt that Pandove had applied for indemnity under Rule 34 of BCCI constitution where the organisation pays on behalf of the member if he is slapped with a penalty while discharging his function.
