An attempt to connect various followers of Guru Nanak to Gurudwaras that remained in the other side of partitioned India for which Sikhs and other followers have been praying for years now. The two sportsmen who turned political leaders showed their true sportsman’s spirit and have gone all out to fulfill their promise. However, the political leadership in Punjab have their own reason to let politics dominate the religious sentiments.

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh decided not to attend the ground-breaking ceremony on the other side of the border. Captain Amarinder Singh who never lets you forget that he has been a soldier shot off a strong worded letter to Pakistan’s  Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, saying it was a historic occasion, but regretted his inability to be present, and known for not to minch words at the ceremony at Dera Baba Nanak reminded Pakistan of its misdeeds.  “Firstly, not a day passes when Indian soldiers are not killed or wounded on the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. Rather than moving towards normalcy, these incidents are escalating,” he said. Secondly, the chief minister claimed, Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has started its nefarious activities in Punjab. He took the stance as a custodian of the safety of the Punjabis.

Shrimoni Akali Dal (SAD) that has been reduced to naught in Punjab had the names of Parkash Singh Badal and his son Sukhbir Singh Badal as former Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister respectively on the foundation stone to be unveiled at the event held at Dera Baba Nanak.  These two leaders managed this with the close proximity to the ruling BJP at the Centre. This went against the decorum and the stone had to be removed in the presence of Vice President of India who was there as the chief guest. Union Minister and wife of Sukhbir Singh Badal, Harsimrat Kaur Badal found the event appropriate to garner some attention for herself and the party, which left the onlookers stunned.  She started exalting the achievements of the Narendra Modi government. A few minutes into her speech, she raked up the issue of the anti-Sikh riots. “The Modi government will not let the perpetrators walk free. Already two of the accused have been sentenced with one being given the death penalty. Our government knows the names of the other accused too. We will not spare them,” said Harsimrat. A section of the audience gave her a due rebuttal as her attempt was mixing politics with religion. A totally uncalled for comment, as it was not a rally organized by any of the parties, but an event where the Vice President was there at the stage and she should have refrained from making any political statements. While she was doing so, her brother Bikramjeet Singh Majithia who finds himself in complete worthlessness was busy shouting slogans while sitting among the audience. He is getting the due flak for his conduct.

While Imran Khan and Navjot Sidhu have gone all out to fulfill the promise, the political leadership has not spared any moment to show why political leadership still is not trustworthy and lack sense to remain sober and calm at events that expect them to be.
