In question period, Brampton-East NDP MPP Gurratan Singh slammed Doug Ford for lying to community members about his backward priorities, all while doing nothing to relieve drivers in certain GTA neighborhoods from falling prey to the unfair practice of postal code discrimination.

“Auto insurance postal code discrimination is a shameful practice that is hurting Ontario drivers,” Singh said. “In the last year alone my community of Brampton has seen premiums increase at a rate nearly five times higher than the provincial average.”

According to a recent Ontario Trial Lawyers Association report, Ontario drivers overpaid as much as $5 billion on auto insurance premiums over the last five years, and a recent Financial Services Commission of Ontario report says Doug Ford’s Conservatives paved the way for a nine per cent increase last month.  Drivers in the Peel-region and parts of the GTA continue to arbitrarily pay significantly higher auto insurance rates than anywhere else in the province.

“Just four days ago the premier told the Punjabi media that they could expect to see an end to postal code discrimination before Christmas,” said Singh. In their response, the Ford government refused to commit to addressing postal code discrimination or stopping skyrocketing auto insurance rates.

“I am frankly shocked by this answer. I expected this to be an easy answer for the premier,” Singh said.“Why is the Premier putting the interests of private insurance companies ahead of the people of Ontario?’, Singh Asked.
