Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die

Reactions over the past one week show that many leaders, commentators and media in India have recognized the atrociousness of the crime committed in Uttar Pradesh that lead a mob to kill a fifty year old over allegations that  Muslim blacksmith Akhlaqe Mohammad had consumed beef. As being claimed by media in India, a mob of over thousand was involved, instigated through announcement over a loudspeaker in a Mandir (Hindu Temple); Akhlaqe was killed when the mob entered his house. His younger son Danish who was preparing for administrative services still remains in hospital. Danish’s elder brother does the community proud by serving the Indian Air Force.

Having accepted the dreadfulness of the series of event, a little has been done to create an impression of calmness.  The event was most fouling, disturbing and heart wrenching. After the incidence came a clique of political leaders to the village and to the various news channels and could only add to it a touch of evil. With sympathy on their lips, and hatred in their hearts, what they could vent out was nothing but challenges, aversion, and created a feeling of disgust. Each time one of them opened his or her mouth, the quote of Mel Brooks came back to haunt- “Tragedy is when I cut my finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die .”

Member of Parliament from the affected area, Dr. Mahesh Sharma, who is also Minister of state for Tourism and Culture in Narendra Modi government;  known for passing controversial and regressive comments in the recent past;  also stressed that no one in the mob had touched the 17-year-old girl who was in the house at the time of the attack. Was the minister there to console the family, or condemn the incidence or to remind the mob of the job well done or job left half done?  The minister needs to be reminded that the logic for food can’t be the logic for murder. To save a sacred cow, the sacredness of being a human can’t be denied!!!!!

The claims and test that confirmed that the meat lying in the refrigerator was mutton and not beef were not allowed to rest by the leaders. How could they? Vote bank politics prompts them to make votes as the dead-bodies arrive. Not to miss any such opportunity  Controversial BJP MLA Sangeet Som who has been named in the Muzzarfarnagar riots, visited the village and got the meat sample again sent for testing in an obvious attempt to get the victims turned accused. The decision to send the meat for testing also shows a mindset that ignores the law. The heinous nature of the killing does not change depending on whether the meat was beef or mutton. Sangeet Som attacked the Samajwadi Party (SP) government in Uttar Pradesh, alleging it was appeasing the “minority community” and “innocent people” were being framed for lynching of Akhlaqe Mohammad.  Not to be left behind, SP leader too came out all guns blazing and in a letter to the UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon, Azam attacked the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for terrorizing Muslims in India and claimed that the Dadri incident was only an extension of the 1992 Babri Masjid episode. “From Babri to Dadri, the RSS and the BJP have been involved in terrorizing the Muslims of India. All this is taking place in a bid to achieve the target of Centre to convert India into a Hindu nation by 2025”, he said. Azam’s attempt to take the matter to United Nations, can have its ill effect, perhaps he has done it intentionally.

The war of words, the bombardment of allegations continues and the same are only the ramification of the recent events. An attempt of Muslims in a Haryana village to build a mosque on a land to which they had a clear title has been denied.  The followers of a Goa-based sect, the Sanatan Sangathan, have been implicated in the murder of rationalists. Nearly 50 persons have been arrested in Varanasi after violence and arson broke out during a march by seers and other local leaders against police action on protesters who were opposing ban on immersion of Ganesha idols in the Ganges. The leader has only made a mockery of the situation, has shamed the very fiber of the secular society making Indians around the world hold their heads in shame.

Amidst all this the man who promised to transform India Prime Minister Narendra Modi has maintained a perfect silence. Some solace that all important balm on the wounds has come from one other than the eldest son of deceased Akhlaqe Mohammad. When asked on a leading TV channel what he would like to tell the politicians there for a panel discussion, Corporal Mohammad Sartaj humbly replied, “Saare jahan se accha Hindustan hamara, mazhab nahi sikhata, aapas mein bair rakhna.” (Religion does not teach us to bear ill-will among ourselves. We are of Hindi, our homeland is Hindustan).

Mohammad Sartaj, deserves accolades, despite going through a personal tragedy that reminded the politicians on the secular structure, non violence and appealed for peace. Where politicians in the disguise of leaders failed the largest democracy-A leader is best when people barely know he exists, Sartaj has come out as a true leader.
