In spite of the wage gap between men and women worsening slightly in recent years, astudy has found Victoria is the best city in Canada to be a woman
The study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives looks (CCPA) at differences between men’s and women’s access to economic and personal security, education, health and positions of leadership in Canada’s 25 biggest cities.
The CCPA report highlights that Victoria is the only city on the list where more women than men are employed, and they account for nearly half of all senior managers and elected officials. But it says the wage gap in the city is on par with the rest of the country, with women earning 73 per cent of what men do — slightly worse than five years ago.

The study also highlights that Women in Toronto are more likely than men to have completed high school, college or university. Toronto has one of the most highly educated populations, coming second only to Ottawa, with 28% of women and men holding university degrees. Men are more likely than women to have completed trades training and apprenticeships (7% compared with 4%). Also Women make up 28% all elected officials in the City of Toronto and its outlying regional municipalities. Women fare better outside of politics, making up 36% of senior managers in the city.
Life expectancy in Toronto is higher than the Canadian average and, as is typically the case, women live slightly longer lives (85 years compared to 80 for men). Men are more likely than women to rate their health as very good or excellent (60% of men compared with 56% of women). Men and women report equal levels of stress in their lives. Rates of screening for cervical cancer are average, with 66% of women reporting they had a Pap smear in the last three years.
Sexual assault is one of the most under-reported crimes in Canada. Statistics Canada estimates that only one in 10 sexual assaults is reported to the police. Domestic violence is also under-reported, with only one in five incidents reported to the police.37 Direct surveys of the population are the best way to estimate the actual crime rate for these offences. However, Statistics Canada only conducts a survey on violent crime once every five years. This survey does not sample a large enough segment of the population to provide reliable crime rates at the provincial or municipal level (with the exception of Ontario). For less populous provinces, there are no reliable estimates.
In Windsor, Ont., the city ranked worst in the study, the wage gap is actually smaller than average, with women making about 75 per cent of what men earn. But only 23 per cent of elected officials and 34 per cent of senior managers in the region are women, and women are more likely to be living below the poverty line than men. The CCPA also says that sexual assault is the only violent crime that’s not on the decline in Canada, and every city still struggles with high rates of sexual and domestic violence.

Bathrust, NB allows more time for Halloween

City councillors in Bathurst, N.B., have voted unanimously to loosen curfew and age limit bylaws for Halloween. The amended bylaws will extend the city’s controversial Halloween curfew by an hour to 8 p.m., and allow teenagers up to the age of 16 to trick-or-treat. Previous bylaws restricted trick-or-treating to children 14 and under, and set a cut-off time of 7 p.m. The city will now impose a $200 fine on anyone over the age of 16 who is caught trick-or-treating. The same penalty applies to anyone caught wearing a “facial disguise” in public after the 8 p.m. curfew.
