'Urine therapy': Girl was punished with parents' consent?

The interim report submitted by Santiniketan University on the shocking case of a Class 5 student being made to drink her urine by her hostel warden suggests the parents of the girl consented to her ‘urine therapy’. The victim, Punita Mistri, is a student at the Patha Bhavan School in Shantiniketan near Kolkata in West Bengal.

On Saturday night, the warden, Uma Poddar, during her daily inspection found that the girl had wet her bed. The 10-year-old was under treatment for bed-wetting. But instead of administering her medicine, the warden allegedly made the minor lick the wet bedsheet “as a treatment to stop the bad habit”. A report submitted by the HRD Ministry to the Prime Minister’s Office is learnt to have stated that the mother of the girl wanted the warden to punish her daughter to get rid of her habit of bedwetting. The warden resorted to the punishment after the mother expressed concern over her daughter’s habit, the report is learnt to have stated. Based on the warden’s account, the interim report says that contrary to media reports, the student wasn’t forced to drink her urine. The warden has told the committee of four professors that the girl was asked to lick her urine but when she protested and started crying, they didn’t push the issue.
