A Calgary family has come out to thank a transit operator for getting them to safety after their house caught fire early Tuesday morning. Vincent Fleck, a Calgary Transit driver for more than 20 years, smelled smoke while he was nearing the end of his shift in the area of Redstone. “We were sleeping and at one o’clock in the morning, we heard banging on the door and, thankfully, a bus driver noticed that there was a house fire and woke us up and got us out safely,” Agata Bastarache, one of the homeowners is reported to have said.
“When I saw the flames, they were about four feet or so. By the time I got them out of the house, it was over eight feet climbing up the side posts by the front door,” said Vincent Fleck, who said he did what anyone else would do in that situation.
Four adults and two children, along with a dog and rabbit, all got out safely thanks to Fleck. Carol Henke, public information officer with the Calgary Fire Department, said crews arrived quickly and were able to do a “quick knock-down” of the fire.
Bastarache said it was a “very scary” situation.
“You never think it happens to you, you always see it on the news, but it did. It was pretty traumatic, pretty terrifying,” said Bastarache, who added it looks like damage was limited to the front of the house. It was pretty amazing, we were outside at one o’clock, he stayed there to about 4:30, let my children on the bus, kept them warm, he was pretty great,” said Bastarache. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
