OTTAWA – APRIL 11, 2017        

On April 11th, the Hon. Rona Ambrose, Leader of the Official Opposition,was joined by members of the Conservative Caucus andthe Sikh community to mark Vaisakhi.

Ms. Ambrose gathered in the spirit of unity with many different community leaders tocelebrate and commemorate the founding of Khalsa, the Sikh community, established in 1699 by their 10th Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

In celebration of the spring harvest, Ms. Ambrose joined community leaders in traditional celebrations such as enjoying festive foods and looks forward to taking part in the upcoming nagarkirtan.

Ms. Ambrose stressed the importance of the communities close ties and thanked individual groups for their generosity and immense contributions to Canada’s prosperity.

The Sikh community takes pride in being compassionate, generous, and are strong advocates of Seva, which relates to selfless service and volunteering for the less unfortunate,” Ms. Ambrose said in her remarks.

The Conservative Caucus also played an integral role in organizing today’s event. Dianne Watts, Member of Parliament for Surrey – White rock, was delighted to see the strong display of the vibrant south Asian community.  “The Sikh people have long contributed to the success and prosperity of Canada, and it is because of celebrations like this Canadian unity knows no bounds.  Conservatives will continue to value and promote this vibrant community” Ms. Watts said.

Garnett Genius, a Conservativecritic for religious freedom, was also a co-host for the event. Genuis saidit was truly a pleasure to host the Sikh community at today’s event. “I am so glad that we are able to celebrate different cultural traditions together, it is this ability that makes our country so strong and our ethnic communities so unique and welcome,” Mr. Genuisstated.
