We, Members of Parliament of Muslim and Jewish backgrounds, express our absolute abhorrence for the act of violence perpetrated against Muslim worshippers in Christchurch, New Zealand today. Terrorist acts of politically motivated violence have no place in society, no matter whom their target, or where they occur. Two attacks were carried out on two different mosques in Christchurch yesterday, killing 49 Muslim worshippers and injuring at least 48 others, while they attended Friday prayers, in what is meant to be a safe space—a place of worship. Even more disturbing, the attackers videotaped their attack in an effort to foment more hatred, citing other supposed “martyrs” in the cause of race and religious-based violence, including, sadly, Canada’s own Alexandre Bissonette, the perpetrator of the Quebec Mosque shooting in January 2017. Hate and violence cannot and must not be the result of this heinous crime. We do not need more hatred; we need more understanding. More understanding between those of different backgrounds, cultures and religions—in New Zealand, in Canada, and around the world. Confronting Islamophobia in all its forms is incumbent upon all of us. On this somber day, we as Canadian Parliamentarians stand together with the Prime Minister in his condemnation of this act, and with the elected representatives and people of New Zealand and globally, in denouncing this depraved act of violence, and speaking out for understanding and inclusion. Our thoughts and prayers are for those innocent lives that were taken, their families and for the speedy recovery of those injured.
