Under Article 35 A, Indian citizens, other than the state subjects of Jammu and Kashmir, cannot acquire immovable property, get state government jobs and avail state-sponsored scholarship schemes in the militancy infested state

“Jammu and Kashmir is India’s only Muslim majority state which acceded to India under a certain condition and that condition was Article 370. Article 35A is part of Article 370 which confers certain rights to citizens of the state. By launching assault on Article 35A, attempts are being made to change the Muslim Majority character of the state,” she said.

Mehbooba noted that those who demand that special status be scrapped must understand that the relation between J&K and India is based on Article 370. “If this special status is scrapped, it will nullify the legitimacy of accession of J&K with the Indian Union,” Mehbooba said.

Omar, vice president of the National Conference, reiterated the party’s resolve to continue fighting for the protection of Article 35A and 370 saying that any attempt to tinker with the states special status would have serious ramifications in the state.”A peaceful state like Arunachal Pradesh is also in flames. People there have hit the roads protesting against any changes in their permanent resident status. That, I believe, should act as an eye opener for those who are inimical to Article 370 and 35A. Any misadventure in fiddling with the state’s special status will inarguably have serious and far reaching consequences,” Omar said. Peoples Conference Chairman Sajad Gani Lone said that any attempts to tamper with Article 35-A is bound to result in a massive backlash for mainstream thought and result in disenchantment and disillusionment in the state. “Any tinkering with the special status of J&K is not only intolerable and unacceptable but would also amount to the erosion of the mainstream thought and space in J&K. It is pertinent to understand that the State’s special status is an article of faith between the people of the state and the rest of the country and also a constitutional bridge that is paramount in its importance”, Sajad said.
