Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi was in India for two days on a State visit and met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and President Pranab Mukherjee, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Suu Kyi had attended the BRICS-BIMSTEC outreach Summit in Goa and her visit to the capital assumes significance in light of the fact that she has already visited China where she was accorded a welcome usually reserved for Heads of State. For India, Suu Kyi’s visit provides a perfect opportunity for both nations to build a foundation for the future, even as the shadow of China grows in the region.

During her meeting with the President, Pranab Mukherjee congratulated her on her party’s victory in the general elections held in Myanmar last year and also complimented her on the role she played in Myanmar’s path to democracy.
