Sri Lanka will carry out the death sentence for 19 convicts over serious drug offences, the government said, after the country decided to reinstate capital punishment for drug-related crimes.

“Cabinet approval had been obtained to implement the death penalty on repeat offenders related to large scale drug offenses,” said Cabinet spokesman and minister Rajitha Senaratne.

He said President Maithripala Sirisena will sign the documents to implement the death penalty.

This was following  unanimous Cabinet decision to reinstate capital punishment for drug-related crimes.

The Cabinet decision came despite Sri Lanka voting in favour of a UN moratorium on the death penalty. Although capital punishment is in the statute of Sri Lanka, the country had stopped hangings since 1976 and death row prisoners spend life terms in jail. Executions have not been carried out as successive presidents since 1978 have refused to issue death warrants.

Punjab DGP comes to the rescue of cricketer Harmanpreet Kaur

Punjab DGP Suresh Arora has come to the rescue Harmanpreet Kaur and has recommended that ace Indian women’s cricketer— facing  demotion from the post of DSP to constable after her graduation degree from a Meerut university was found to be fake — be given three years to complete her graduation. A case for special exemption  would be put before the Cabinet soon.  The DGP has recommended that Harmanpreet may not be paid salary for three years, but would retain her DSP rank.

A native of Moga, Harmanpreet was working with the Railways before CM Capt Amarinder Singh offered her the post of DSP. She joined this March. Harmanpreet got political support with state Congress chief Sunil Jakhar suggesting to the government to retain her rank and status in spite of her fake degree.

British MP denied entry into India

Lord Alexander Carlile, British lawyer of Bangladesh’s jailed opposition leader Khaleda Zia, was denied entry into India for not having appropriate visa. The lawyer had scheduled a press meet in Delhi among other engagements. MEA spokesman Raveesh Kumar told media in New Delhi,“Carlile arrived in Delhi without having obtained the appropriate Indian visa. His intended activity in India was incompatible with the purpose of his visit as mentioned in his visa application. It was, therefore, decided to deny him entry into India upon arrival.”

Accused in Kathua case shifted to Gurdaspur jail

Pathankot District and Sessions judge Dr Tejwinder Singh has directed that all seven accused in the Kathua rape and murder case be shifted to the Gurdaspur central jail following a Supreme Court directive.

There was a flurry of activity both outside and within the jail when the accused arrived in a J&K police bus at 5.45 pm on Thursday evening.

The judge had earlier summoned Pathankot SSP Vivek Sheel Soni and directed him to personally supervise the shifting, keeping in view the sensitivity of the case.

Immediately after the court proceedings were over, Soni despatched a contingent of the Pathankot police to escort the accused to the Gurdaspur jail.

Meanwhile, both the defence and the prosecution concluded the examination-in-chief and the cross-examination of prosecution witness Manzoor Ahmad, who in his capacity as a revenue official, had drawn a map of the site of the crime.
