Sri Lanka beat South Africa by three runs (D/L method) in the fourth ODI  at Kandy. The win narrows the series deficit to 1-3 after the Proteas won the first three games to seal series. In the rain-affected game, hosts Sri Lanka had scored 306/7 in their allotted 39 overs with Dasun Shanaka scoring 65 off 34 balls. South Africa, given a revised target of 191 in 21 overs, ended at 187/9.Brief scores Sri Lanka 306/7 in 39 overs (D Shanaka 65) beat South Africa 187/9 in 21 overs.

USC signs lineman Schirmer. Has dubious record of punching a referee

Offensive lineman Bernard Schirmer, who punched a referee during a junior college game in 2016, has signed to play for USC. Head coach Clay Helton said the Trojans extensively evaluated Schirmer and were left with “no question” that he will be “a great member of our Trojan family.”

Schirmer was a 19-year-old player at Mount San Antonio College when he knocked out an official with a punch. Schirmer has said repeatedly that the punch was accidental.Although Schirmer was arrested after the incident, he did not face criminal charges.

Carmelo for Rockets

Carmelo Anthony reached a verbal agreement to join the Houston Rockets. Anthony, a 10-time All-Star who was waived on July 30 by the Atlanta Hawks, had been expected to sign with the Rockets when he cleared waivers. Entering his 16th NBA season, Anthony has a career scoring average of 24.1 points per game with the Denver Nuggets, New York Knicks and Oklahoma City Thunder.

Jr NBA: Disappointing start by Indian teams 

In a dismal start at the inaugural Junior NBA World Championships, the Indian boys’ and girls’ teams lost their respective pool matches on the opening day of the Under-13 and Under-14 basketball tournament. The Indian girls, representing the city of Bengaluru, were hammered 11-57 and 28-75 by Asia Pacific and Europe, respectively, in their pool matches. The Indian boys from New Delhi fared better but they also ended up on the losing side in both their pool matches. They lost 34-75 to the combined team from Europe before succumbing to a 43-80 defeat against the Asia Pacific side later in the day.

Kenya’s 400m hurdles champ killed in car crash

 Kenyan athlete Nicholas Bett, the 2015 world 400m hurdles champion, was killed on Wednesday in a car crash near his home in western Kenya, police said. “The accident occurred when his vehicle hit a bump and rolled and he died on the spot,” the police said. The 28-year-old Bett, the father of two-year-old twins, made his name at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing where he surprised the field by taking gold. He had since struggled to replicate that form.

Kepa pays Euro 80m release fee ahead of Chelsea move

Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has paid his Euro 80 million buy-out clause to break his contract with the Spanish side ahead of a reported move to Chelsea. The 23-year-old is expected to sign for the Premier League side, with current goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois poised to move to Real Madrid. At Euro 80 million, Arrizabalaga will become the most expensive goalkeeper in football history, ahead of Liverpool’s Alisson Becker, who moved from AS Roma for Euro 75 million earlier in the transfer window.
