Toronto – Today the NDP candidate in the Scarborough-Rouge River byelection Neethan Shan committed to making Fighting Racism in the Classroom his first bill in the Ontario Legislature if voters elect him on September 1st.

“No student in Ontario should feel left out of their own education. It’s time for students from diverse backgrounds, whose communities make up the fabric of our society, to feel accepted and included in their education,” said Shan, speaking in front of Queen’s Park.

“A huge piece of the education puzzle is making sure that our children see themselves in what they are learning,” he continued. “This bill will call for a comprehensive review or our public school curriculum to ensure that anti-racism and ethno-cultural equity are at the forefront of the classroom experience for our kids,” he noted.

Shan was joined by Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath.

“Neethan has dedicated his life to fighting racism, to bringing diverse communities together in that struggle,” said Horwath. “I’m proud to stand with him today as he announces that Fighting Racism in the Classroom will be the first piece of legislation he will introduce when he is elected on September 1st.”
