John Ward started a trend by becoming the first umpire to officiate in an international

match with a helmet on at the Manuka Oval . Barinder Sran had an unintentional part

to play in Ward’s decision in the fourth ODI. A few weeks ago in a Ranji Trophy

match, the 54-yearold umpire was seriously injured after being struck on the head by

a shot from Sran and had to be hospitalised. Ward stood in a Big Bash League

fixture last Saturday in Sydney, his first since the injury, in a helmet. Sran didn’t

feature in the match though as he was rested. There are suggestions that umpires

will need to wear more protective gear.
