OTTAWA, ON – Rona Ambrose, Interim Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada and Leader of the Official Opposition, issued the following commemorating the terrorist attacks of October 2014:

“Today, we remember Warrant Officer Vincent and Corporal Cirillo, offer solace to their families, and pay tribute to those who stand on guard for Canada so that we can live in a safe, secure, peaceful and free country.

“Two years ago this week, members of the Canadian Armed Forces were killed by individuals inspired by a violent jihadist ideology.

“In Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent was killed just for wearing his uniform. In Ottawa, Corporal Nathan Cirillo was killed at his post, standing guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the National War Memorial. His murder was followed by an attack on Parliament Hill.

“Our nation grieved for these fallen soldiers and their families, both targeted only for wearing the uniform of the Canadian Armed Forces.

“These terrible acts are a reminder that while our country enjoys safety, security, peace and freedom, we are not immune to terrorism. We must remain vigilant against those who wish to harm Canadians and our way of life.

“As we have seen in Paris, in Nice, in Orlando, and with the death of two Canadians in the Philippines, just in the last year, jihadist terrorism is a threat not confined to any one corner of the globe.

“This is why we stand squarely behind the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces and honour those currently helping in the fight against ISIS in the Middle East.

“We are forever grateful to all of those who have served in the fight against terrorism at home and abroad.”
